Penn State Daily Collegian: Why Renew Your Passport?

When you’re applying for your first passport as a young adult, you probably don’t think much about it. But if you forget to renew your passport before its expiration date, things get very complicated quickly. Keep reading here in  Penn State Daily Collegian  to learn why not forgetting to renew your passport is so important.

Why You Shouldn’t Forget to Renew Your Passport

If you try to use a passport that’s about to expire, you could run into huge problems. First of all, it’s illegal to travel on a passport that has less than 6 months left until it expires. That means that if you’re in a rush to get to another country, you can’t use your current document if it’s close to expiring.

If you try to use an expired passport while you’re abroad, you also run the risk of being detained by the authorities. In some cases, you could be thrown in prison as well. Wherever you’re going, make sure that you’re using a valid passport that won’t cause you any trouble. Otherwise, you could then risk having your trip cut short.

What to Do If You Miss the Passport Renewal Deadline

If you miss the deadline to renew your passport by a few weeks, you might be able to submit a handwritten application. However, if you’re a few months behind on your renewal, you’ll have to go through the official State Department process. That could take a few months, and it’s best to avoid this situation in the first place.

First of all, if you’re a teen whose passport is about to expire, you’ll probably want to renew it. That’s because passports are valid for 10 years for adults and 5 years for minors. But if you’re an adult who’s about to miss the renewal period for your passport, then you’ll have to apply for a new one.

Never Forget to Renew Your Passport Again!

As you’ve seen, failing to renew your passport in time can result in serious consequences. It’s important to not forget to renew your passport before its expiration date, but it’s also crucial to remember to apply for a new one before your current document runs out of time.
